Child Safety Planning

Filed under: Child Safety — Gwen @ 2:47 pm

Many people think that child safety does not need to be worked on or something that can be done in just a matter of clicks. Child safety is every parents and guardians responsibility. It is a responsibility that demands as much attention and commitment as possible. And it is for this reason specifically that the concept of child safety planning is considered.

On the most basic, child safety planning has something to do with setting the appropriate set of rules and guidelines that can be used to oversee your child and everything that surrounds him or her. The set of rules and guidelines should be organized and structured according to the time and space needed for your child to act normally. The planning is important as this will prepare you to act according to what is safe for your children.

However, child safety planning is not as easy as you may think. It involves effort and time figuring out what would be best for your childs safety. And, it cant be done easily without knowing the real condition or problem in the childrens environment.

A child may have problems that could be physical, mental, or emotional. Whatever problem is plaguing the child leaving you worried, it is best to determine them as early as possible, which child care specialists suggest.

It is also important to be clear as to who you need to protect. It could be your child or other children. Note that minors tend to act according to what they will enjoy, without knowing if the situation will be best or safe for them or not. It is exactly here where the responsibility of parents for child safety comes in. The parents are then needed to supervise their children in the best way possible, be it something related to changing behaviors or disciplining a child.

When planning for child safety, it is also a wise idea to pinpoint exactly when and how the problem occurs. This of course may apply to those that are predictable. Perhaps the best way to make this happen is to observe your child and monitor his or her actions. In relation to this, it is great for every parent or guardian to determine who will be involved in the child safety plan. Remember that when planning, there are some instances that you may need help from other responsible individuals. Try to share your child safety plan with professional caregivers, or even with those babysitters who are just working short term. You may be surprised as to how much great ideas they can contribute to make your child safety plan work.

Consider a time limit for your plan. Ask yourself how long will the plan be in place and how often will you reassess it. Do your best to make your child safety plan work.

Child Safety Wristbands

Filed under: Child Safety — Gwen @ 7:54 pm

Why is it that children seem to inherit the skills of the famous Harry Houdini? A few seconds away from your gaze and you realize that they have performed their disappearing act. No wonder some parents resort to putting their children on leashes when they go out. They are not exactly the ones we normally use on our pets. Try tying the leash on your kids neck and youll have the social welfare banging on your door. There are actually those that are attached to a childs wrist to ensure that he doesnt get too far away from mommy.

Still, there are parents who think that leashes, regardless where it is attached, sound barbaric. These arent really designed to trample on human rights, but are just created to lessen the incidence of your child getting lost or abducted.

Places that are crowded such as parks, shopping centers, zoos, airports, sports venues and the like are the possible settings that your child could get lost in. If you are in the company of more than one child, it is not convenient to use the child leash. Unless you want to get all tangled holding on to those leashes, it would be more advisable to use the child safety wristbands. These do not limit the distance that your child can wander off from you but these can reunite you with them a lot faster in case they are lost.

Child safety wristbands, which mostly come in very bright colors, are more than just a fashion statement. These are actually a part of some safety initiatives to assist parents who have lost their children in crowded places. These child safety wristbands contain the parents contact number. This information is essential so that you can be contacted once someone finds your child.

The child safety wristbands are basically the simplest and easiest to use among all child safety gadgets, yet one of the most effective. You dont have to hold on to your childs hand all the time while you are in a place swarming with people. Just be sure to educate your child on what to do in case he doesnt see you anywhere near him. Make sure that he knows where to go and who to ask help from in case he feels that he is lost.

The child safety wristbands do not totally eliminate the possibility of an abduction or other potential dangers. But they are a faster and less stressful way of being reunited with your lost child once again. The responsibility of ensuring your reunion with your child does not start and end with the child safety wristbands. It is your crucial role to educate your child on how to make the wristbands work best for him.

Safety of a Homebirth

Having the baby in your home? Who does such things?  Didn’t that only happen back in the early days of our country when doctor’s had to go out to the prairie and deliver babies?

Not so.  There is a large group of women who are discovering the benefts of having a baby at home, or homebirth as it is sometimes called.

It is called midwifery the practice of having your baby at home.  Although not doctors or nurses, people in this line of work called midwifery are professionally regulated.  I myself have seen the steady rise of homebirths through my practice as a San Diego certified midwife.

The people, generally women, who perform this line of work are called homebirth midwives.  Midwives is a more common term that people are familiar with and means a person who attends childbirth and provides support during labor and delivery.

Now why the midwife generally isn’t a doctor or nurse is because having your baby at home, or midwifery, is usually the belief that pregnancy and delivery are natural events.  This is in stark contrast with the medical model which relies on medicine to assist and improve the pregnancy and delivery.

With that aside, lets look at why a lot of women are having babies at home rather than hospitals.  What are the reasons why women are choosing homebirths?

First off, with the continued presence of the midwife, the length of labor can be reduced.  Most women don’t realize that the use of pain medications although seemingly helpful in regards to pain, actually slows the labor down.  This actually creates more pain and makes the labor last longer.

Second, midwifery practices actually causes a reduction in the need for forceps and other devices in a delivery.  The process of allowing the birth and delivery to happen naturally is what reduces the need for those devices.

Third, the possiblity of c-section deliveries are actually reduced.  Most c-sections happen when during labor, it was thought that a natural birth process was not possible.  Either because of the safety of the baby was in mind or the safety of the mother.  When in reality the complication was created because the natural birth process wasn’t allowed to happen.

These are 3 benefits when you have a natural homebirth.  There are a lot more benefits, but I am positive most women who are pregnant would say these are 3 huge benefits.

So even though some might call it strange to have a child at home, recent studies indicate that allowing a natural birth to happen is much safer for the mom and the baby.  With over 300 births attended as a homebirth midwife in San Diego, this has proven to be the case time and time again.
